Ecopreneurship as a cureall

The big vibe this decade is Ecopreneurship, making money from nature, from nature’s services, or from bespoke products offsetting damage to natural systems over our historic pursuit of livelihood. The problem with green business is however, implementation. Roll-out you see (and this is still implementation) is case/instance subjective. Roll-out becomes problematic as aspiring entrepreneurs typically try the broad brush approach. \

What we’re seeing now in the field is rampant green-washing; half-baked solutions are leaving sustainable ideas languishing - (cos they’re usually sold as boring). Which in the end begs the all-important question. Is ecopreneurship even viable, given the challenges posed by the ever-growing world population and the rapid onset of climate change? \

Not saying here that extracting wealth from landspaces or the odd biome isn’t profitable. It’s that exact promise of lucre which drives some of the biggest businesses in the world. Needing stats, I asked Gemini for some feedback. She responded thus. \

  • Constellation Energy & AES Corporation: Heavy-hitting utility providers that operate vast networks of carbon-free energy assets, deeply leveraging solar fields and wind farms to power the grid.

2. Nature & Nature’s Services (Agriculture & Forestry)

These corporations rely on ecosystem services—such as fertile soil, biological growth cycles, water filtration, and natural pollination—to harvest and process raw assets.

  • Weyerhaeuser: A pure-play nature company. It is one of the largest private owners of timberlands in the world, managing millions of acres of forests and making its revenue directly from growing and harvesting trees.
  • Archer Daniels Midland (ADM) & Bunge: Agribusiness behemoths that sit at the center of the global food supply chain. They process nature’s bounty (grains, oilseeds, and crops) into food ingredients, animal feed, and biofuels.
  • Corteva Agriscience: A major agricultural chemical and seed company whose business model relies on genetic resource tracking and supplying the foundational tools for nature-based crop production.
  • International Paper: Directly utilizes forestry ecosystems to produce fiber-based packaging and pulp products.

3. The Earth (Mining & Mineral Extraction)

These companies generate their wealth by extracting geological riches directly from the Earth’s crust.

  • Freeport-McMoRan: One of the world’s largest publicly traded copper and molybdenum mining companies, pulling raw materials out of the ground that are critical for global infrastructure.
  • Newmont Corporation: The world’s largest gold mining company, entirely dependent on locating and extracting precious metal deposits from the earth.
  • Nucor & Steel Dynamics: While they process steel, their supply chains and raw material operations are tethered deeply to iron ore extraction and metallurgy.

Note on Traditional Energy: If you look at “the Earth” in a broader sense, oil and gas giants like ExxonMobil and Chevron are technically extracting fossilized prehistoric nature from deep underground. However, in modern corporate sustainability frameworks, they are usually categorized under resource depletion rather than “ecosystem services.””
